The Terraces

The fields sloping down to Burley and Kirkstall Roads were developed from the mid-19th century onwards with large houses and terraces along Clarendon Road, Moorland Road, Kelso Road, Belle Vue Road, Victoria and Consort Terraces and later in the century by streets of smaller terraced houses, such as the Claremonts which were built on the former gardens of Claremont House.

The terraces are an important part of the character of the area and hedges and small gardens can contribute to the overall greenery. In some cases the external appearance has been neglected, particularly with over large dormers, paved over gardens and rubbish bins on the streets. Some of the streets retain the original setts and some the York stone pavements, though where the stone has been stolen it is often replaced with tarmac. There is an opportunity to encourage continuous green links along terraces.
