The Georgian Squares

The Georgian Hanover and Woodhouse Squares were first laid out in the 1820s but the houses developed slowly over the 19th century. Denison Hall commands the top of Hanover Square park, an important Local Green Space surrounded by residential Victorian terraces. Woodhouse Square, a smaller green space, has several listed buildings on the south and east sides, the late Victorian Claremont streets to the north and a modern student block Sycamore House on the west. The Swarthmore Education Centre occupies six of the original Georgian terraced houses on the south side of the Square.

The Squares represent a collection of fine buildings, open spaces and public realm. They could benefit from retaining their original features, greenery, stone setts and distinctive boundary walls. The entry point from the city centre is via the pedestrian Little Woodhouse Bridge over the inner ring road tunnel leading from Great George Street to Woodhouse Square and Clarendon Road. This will be an important link with the planned Innovation Arc and would benefit from improved surfaces and better signage.
