The 2011 Neighbourhood Design Statement identified the characteristics of different streets of the area. The updated Character Analysis Report (2021) outlines grouped character areas within Little Woodhouse, each with its own attributes and opportunities.

The Heritage Area as a whole – taking in three conservation areas and other areas of heritage buildings
The Georgian Squares – Hanover and Woodhouse Squares and their surrounding streets
The Victorian Villas – large houses built for merchants with their grounds and gardens
The Terraces – built throughout the nineteenth century, larger terraces then smaller terraced streets
The Post War estates – constructed mainly by the local council following demolition of earlier terraces
Purpose Built Student Accommodation – a new wave of development of large blocks of student rooms
The Rosebank Millennium Green – a natural green space of 5 acres on a reclaimed hillside
The Local Centre of Woodsley Road and Burley Road with shopping and other community facilities
The Campus Areas – the Western Campus of the University of Leeds and the Park Lane Campus of Leeds City College
The Commercial area between Burley and Kirkstall Roads including light industrial, leisure and student uses
The Edges of the area – looking to connections with the north, east, south and west boundaries of the area
