Little Woodhouse’s location close to the city centre and the large student population has influenced the nature of retail in the area. Local convenience stores survive in a few places, small restaurants and takeaways predominate in the Woodsley Road/Burley Lodge Local Centre and along the Burley Road. There is only one surviving public house – the Fox and Newt at the eastern end of Burley Street.
A small number of traditional convenience stores in the area, such as Kendal Lane Stores, have been recently joined by local versions of large retailers, Tesco, Co-op and Morrisons.
The Local Centre of Hyde Park Road/Woodsley Road has a post office, two pharmacies as well as food shops and many takeaways which are shuttered in daytime and attract graffiti. The local medical centre, Hyde Park Surgery and adjoining Woodsley Health Centre, as well as the Grand Mosque, Woodsley Community Centre and The Community Shop are also part of the centre.
The area would benefit from improvement to the streetscape, de-cluttering of signs, improvement to the pavements and additional greenery, to encourage more shoppers. There is an opportunity for future developments to restore the original shop fronts in place of heavy shutters.
